Trying to repair a chimney in Michigan in the winter is hard work. Don't get me wrong I am very glad to have any work this time of year but the cold weather really takes it out of you. We started and finished this chimney in sterling heights today. Let the shop at about seven by the time we picked up brick and mortar it was 8:00 and we were working by nine.
The chimney crown came off pretty easy. We tore of the first ten courses of brick on the chimney then rebuilt them. The remaining 5 courses above the roof were an easy enough repair. We just had to tuckpoint them. When you do brick and chimney repair in the winter you the really end up doing 2x the work for half the money. it such an involved process. you have to add additive to your mortar use fast set concrete and blow heat on the brick. I really find when i torch my brick and am laying hot brick on a mortar bed with additive the work sets up really well.
Tomorrow we have to do some tuckpointing in Lake Orion Michigan I hope it goes as smoothly as today did. http://MichiganChimneyrepair.com
